The hamlet of Vlkolínec exemplifies a certain type of Central Slovakia settlement with the wooden architecture to be found in the mountain and foothills regions. This self-contained constellation of log houses lies amid a landscape of narrow strips of field and pasture sheltered from the north by the Sidorovo massif. The centre of the hamlet boasts a belfry from the year 1770 and a well. Both of these free-standing structures were built in the traditional manner and are roofed - as originally were all the houses and other buildings - with shingle. Vlkolínec has been adjudged the best-preserved example of its kind in the Carpathian region, an estimation which contributed to its inclusion in UNESCO´ s World Heritage List.
