The fantasy and collective intellect of the Slovak people have created, renewed and preserved to this day an uncommon wealth of folk art.
That the art of our people remains vital is due to the fact that the cultivation of the spiritual heritage of our forefathers still continues in numerous amateur groups, which every year demonstrate their skill at folkore festivals such as those at Východná, Detva and Starý Tekov.
Folklore festivities are thus festivals of Slovak rural life and celebrations of the beauty of our nation's creativity which safeguard the costumes, dances, songs and customs in the various distinct regions. The traditional wedding ceremony has preserved that variety not only in dress, but also in the oral traditions of a rich spiritual culture.
The Tekov costume is very elaborate, and festive occasions, in particular, bring out the fullness of its beauty. To me its colours seemed to shine like a dewy rainbow, and so I composed my art-protis Tekov Wedding in an abundance of colour. In this resplendent scene I wanted to render faithfully the heart-warming atmosphere of this ancient folklore family ceremony.
