The fishes of this stamp series, the Zingel, European mudminnow, and the wild Danubian form of carp are original Danubian species and rare elements of Slovak fauna with very limited occurence. Since the abundance of these species has been decliming, they have been included in the Red list of threatened species of fish of Europe, as well as in the Red list of threatened species of list of Slovakia.

The zingel occurs in catchment of the rivers Danube and Dnestr. It prefers colder flowing waters. In Slovakia it is protected by law.
