The year 2000 has been declared of the Global Mathematics Year under the auspices of such institutions as UNESCO, International Mathematics Union, as well as many national institutions all around the world. In Slovakia, the activities of the Global Mathematics Year are co-ordinated by the Slovak Mathematics Society which is a subsidiary of the Union of Slovak Mathematicians and Physicists (JSMF).

Mr. Jur Hronec (1881-1959) a long-time university and high school professor of mathematics, was the founder and the first dean of the Slovak university education system (Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Pedagogical faculty and many others), he was also the elected chairman of the Slovak Cultural Association - Matica slovenská and the officer of many others institutions (e.g. JSMF Union, or the mathematical student competition).

Mr. Štefan Schwarz (1914-1996), the world-renown Slovak mathematician, founder of the semi-group theory, a long-time and extraordinarily successful professor of mathematics at the Slovak Technical University (STU). From 1965 to 1970 he was the Chairman of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
