ln this jubilee year we remember the 2000th anniversary of Jesus Chríst's birth, the round anníversary of the era -of our era. Today it is widely known that the year of Christ's birth, which had been detennined retrospectively in the 6th century, was not fixed correctly. Dionysius Exiguus, a scholar monk, made a mistake in the calculations. He counted the years according to the ancient Roman calendar beginning with the mythical foundation of Rome. According to him the year of Christ's birth was the year 754 after Rome's foundation which at the same time was the starting point for the design of a Christian calendar. Thus e.g. the census in the Roman Empire, which is mentioned in the Gospels in connection with Christ's birth, would have been carried out in the years 6- 7 before Christ. Dionysius ' chronology became gradually widespread in both clerícal and secular documents only in the 8th century A.D. and its change at present would only mean undesired confusion.
In accordance with this tradition of our chronology we celebrate this year as the Jubilee 2000.
