Corn husks - a natural material traditionally used in Slovakia to make figures, platters and mats. Work with the material exploits its exceptional qualities: an interesting surface structure, natural colour, ease of modelling in its damp state, and durability of colour and shape when dry. The creative mind and skilful hand of the folk artist can make this material come to life. A woman with a baby or at the spinning wheel, a wood-cutter, a shepherd, a Nativity scene: the wide range of themes is taken mostly from the traditional way of life in the Slovak village, although a significant place is also reserved for Christian celebrations such as Christmas and Easter. Working with corn husks has been a tradition of the Pálka family for more than thirty years. Their invention and dexterity won them first place in the 1994 World Festival of Folk Nativity Scenes in Bellingham in the USA.
